In addition, BS patients are highly predisposed to cancers. Although recently the causative gene of BS (BLM) was identified as a DNA helicase homologue, the function of BLM in DNA replication has not been elucidated. In this study, p53 mutation and microsatellite instability in B-cell lymphomas originating from 2 sibling BS patients were investigated. In the originally developed tumor of both patients, no p53 mutation was detected. In one patient, however, after treatment by ionizing radiation the B-cell lymphoma recurred, showing a 9-bp deletion in exon 7. In lymphoma cells and an EB-virus-transformed cell line from BS lymphocytes of this patient, microsatellite instability was also detected from the reduced length of microsatellite DNA markers, although in the other patient microsatellite instability was not detected. Thus, 2 B-cell lymphomas, despite having the same BLM mutation, showed different phenotypes in terms of p53 mutation and microsatellite instability."}]},"source":{"sourceTitle":["International Journal of Cancer"],"sourceTitleAbbrev":"INT. vertebrobasilar dissecting aneurysms occurring with subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) were reviewed in 42 patients, with particular focus on the time, incidence, and outcome in association with subsequent rupture. Twenty-nine patients underwent 31 surgical procedures, and the remaining 13 patients were managed without surgery. Surgical details included 19 proximal vertebral artery obliterations (including 1 case of endovascular surgery using balloon occlusion), 9 trappings, 1 wrapping, 1 bleb clipping, and 1 bleb clipping combined with wrapping. Surprisingly, subsequent rupture occurred in 30 (71.4%) of the 42 patients. Excluding one patient with postoperative rupture, 29 patients suffered a subsequent rupture in the unsecured stage. Of these 29 patients, 19 were operated on after the subsequent rupture and 10 were not operated on because of deteriorated clinical condition (9 patients) or anatomic considerations (1 patient). Of the 30 patients that suffered a subsequent rupture, 14 died. Twelve of the deaths were directly related to the second episode of rupture. Of the 12 patients who did not suffer a subsequent rupture, 10 underwent operations and there were no operative deaths. Only one patient died as the result of the initial critical SAH. The mortality (46.7%) of the patients with subsequent rupture was significantly higher (P < 0.05) than that (8.3%) of the patients without subsequent rupture. Seventeen (56.7%) of the 30 subsequent ruptures occurred within 24 hours after the first SAH, and 24 (80%) occurred within the first week. Six (66.7%) of the 9 patients operated on within 24 hours after the first SAH and 11 (68.8%) of the 16 patients operated on within a week suffered preoperative subsequent ruptures. A time delay before surgical treatment resulted in a markedly high incidence of subsequent rupture. Compared with operative disadvantages, high mortality as the result of subsequent ruptures was devastating. Early surgical obliteration of the parent artery is advocated for unilateral vertebral artery dissecting aneurysms that occur with SAH."}]},"source":{"sourceTitle":["Neurosurgery"],"sourceTitleAbbrev":"NEUROSURGERY","issn":[{"issNnr":"0148396X"}],"volisspag":{"volume":"36","issue":"5","supplement":null,"firstPage":"905","lastPage":"913","pages":null},"articleNumber":null,"publicationYear":"1995"},"enhancement":{"descriptors":[{"descriptorType":"MED","descriptor":[{"weight":"b","mainterm":{"content":"adult"},"disterm":null,"drgterm":null,"devterm":null,"link":null,"ancestor":["adult","groups The MICs of CZOP against clinical isolates were determined with an inoculum size of 106 cfu/ml. The MIC50 was 0.39 µg/ml for Staphylococcus aureus (MSSA), =0.05 µg/ml for Streptococcus pneumoniae, =0.05 µg/ml for Haemophilus influenzae, 0.39 µg/ml for Branhamella catarrhalis and 1.56 µg/ml for Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The peak serum level was 86.7 µg/ml and the peak sputum level was 2.7 µg/ml, when 1 g of CZOP was drip infused for 1 hour in 1 patient with diffuse panbronchiolitis. Clinical evaluation of CZOP in 10 patients with respiratory infections was excellent in 1, good in 8 and poor in 1, the efficacy rate being 90%. Nausea was observed in 1 patient. Mild elevation of serum k+ was seen in 2 patients, and eosinophilia was noticed in 1 patient. in response to appetitive predictive cues and outcomes, whereas striatal cholinergic tonically active interneurons (TANs) decrease their rate. This may indicate that the activity of TANs and DANsis negatively correlated and that TANs can broaden the basal ganglia reinforcement teaching signal, for instance by encoding worse than predicted events. We studied the activity of 106 DANs and 180 TANs of two monkeys recorded during the performance of a classical conditioning task with cues predicting the probability of food, neutral, and air puff outcomes. DANs responded to all cues with elevations of discharge rate, whereas TANs depressed their discharge rate. Nevertheless, although dopaminergic responses to appetitive cues were larger than their responses to neutral or aversive cues, the TAN responses were more similar. Both TANs and DANs responded faster to an air puff than to a food outcome; however, DANs responded with a discharge elevation, whereas the TAN responses included major negative and positive deflections. Finally, food versus air puff omission was better encoded by TANs. In terms of the activity of single neurons with distinct responses to the different behavioral events, both DANs and TANs were more strongly modulated by reward than by aversive related events and better reflected the probability of reward than aversive outcome. Thus, TANs and DANs encode the task episodes differentially. The DANs encode mainly the cue and outcome delivery, whereas the TANs mainly encode outcome delivery and omission at termination of the behavioral trial episode. cohorts of Chernobyl cleanup workers from Estonia (4,786 men) and Latvia (5,546 men) were followed from 1986 to 1998 to investigate cancer incidence among persons exposed to ionizing radiation from the Chernobyl accident. Each cohort was identified from various independent sources and followed using nationwide population and mortality registries. Cancers were ascertained by linkage with nationwide cancer registries. Overall, 75 incident cancers were identified in the Estonian cohort and 80 in the Latvian cohort. The combined-cohort standardized incidence ratio (SIR) for all cancers was 1.15 (95% confidence interval (CI) = 0.98-1.34) and for leukemia, 1.53 (95% CI = 0.62-3.17; n = 7). Statistically significant excess cases of thyroid (SIR = 7.06, 95% CI = 2.84-14.55; n = 7) and brain cancer (SIR = 2.14, 95% CI = 1.07-3.83; n = 11) were found, mainly based on Latvian data. However, there was no evidence of a dose response for any of these sites, and the relationship to radiation exposure remains to be established. Excess of thyroid cancer cases observed may have been due to screening, the leukemia cases included 2 unconfirmed diagnoses, and the excess cases of brain tumors may have been a chance finding. There was an indication of increased risk associated with early entry to the Chernobyl area and late follow-up, though not statistically significant. Further follow-up of Chernobyl cleanup workers is warranted to clarify the possible health effects of radiation exposure. © 2006 Wiley-Liss, Inc."}]},"source":{"sourceTitle":["International Journal of Cancer"],"sourceTitleAbbrev":"Int. discharge (HFD) neurons of the basal ganglia (BG) is modulated by expectation, delivery, and omission of aversive events. Therefore the full value domain encoded by the BG network is still unknown. We studied the activity of HFD neurons of the globus pallidus external segment (GPe, n = 310), internal segment (GPi, n = 149), and substantia nigra pars reticulata (SNr, n = 145) in two monkeys during a classical conditioning task with cues predicting the probability of food, neutral, or airpuff outcomes. The responses of BG HFD neurons were longlasting and diverse with coincident increases and decreases in discharge rate. The population responses to reward-related events were larger than the responses to aversive and neutral-related events. The latter responses were similar, except for the responses to actual airpuff delivery. The fraction of responding cells was larger for reward-related events, with better discrimination between rewarding and aversive trials in the responses with an increase rather than a decrease in discharge rate. GPe and GPi single units were more strongly modulated and better reflected the probability of reward- than aversive-related events. SNr neurons were less biased toward the encoding of the rewarding events, especially during the outcome epoch. Finally, the latency of SNr responses to all predictive cues was shorter than the latency of pallidal responses. These results suggest preferential activation of the BG HFD neurons by rewarding compared with aversive events. early differentiation of cultured rat hippocampal progenitor cells using Northern blot analysis. Embryonic rat hippocampal progenitors were kept proliferating and undifferentiated (neurospheres) in the presence of mitogens and induced to stop proliferation and to differentiate into neurons and astrocytes by mitogen removal. We found two- to four-fold elevated levels of mRNAs for HDAC 5, 6, 7 and 9 in early differentiation times in comparison with proliferating neurospheres while mRNA levels for HDAC 1, 2 and 3 did not change significantly. Interestingly, the upregulated HDACs all belong to class II of histone deacetylases. mRNAs for HDAC 4, 8 and 10 were not detectable by Northern analysis. We suggest that the changes in HDAC mRNA expression levels might be connected with chromatin rearrangement during neural differentiation. © 2003 Elsevier Science Ireland Ltd.
